Ten Tips for Blended Practicals

Practical Engineering Education activities, that usually involve interaction with equipment, presented a significant challenge to adapt for remote delivery during the suspension of face to face teaching. The department of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE) have led the discussion about Remote Practicals in the Learning and Teaching community, publishing papers and being invited to present at numerous, high profile webinars. With restrictions on higher education being partially lifted, many institutions worldwide intend to offer blended learning , prioritising in-person activities that are troublesome to deliver online, such as practicals. UK & Ireland Engineering Education Network

The recent 2025 UK and Ireland Engineering Education Network conference at the University of Manchester was a brilliant opportunity to meet engineering educators, to hear about work that is taking place across HE, and to play with Lego in the name of education and outreach. Here, Michael Trikic shares his take aways. A big idea from the conference was that the HE sector is facing systemic challenges and change, think reduced budgets, increased competition, generative AI, but that there are opportunities too. The recently published Industrial Strategy 2025 has engineering at its core, and will require a pipeline of engineers to fulfil it. What this means for HE isn't clear, and perhaps this kind of announcement isn't anything new (see keynote, below), but more on that later. Behind the Blog: My Internship with the Centre for Engineering Education

The CEE blog editors were very fortunate to benefit from the University of Sheffield 70 hour Internship scheme, through which we worked with the talented and prolific Marsya Ali . Marsya interviewed engineering educators from across the Faculty of Engineering to find out about their work and ideas, then wrote a series of blogs based upon these that will be published here during the coming months.
